Professor Queen Martin of the Health and Human Performance department hosted a physical activity field day in the new gymnasium, on April 22.
Martin’s community planning class came together and formed a team to create the field day inside the new gym. There were many students who came out to support and exercise. The activities included football throws, sack races, soccer, hula hooping, obstacle courses, suicide running, weight lifting, dodge ball, stacking tables, ladder drills, the Wii active games, vertical jumps, skip it, jump rope, treadmill stationary bicycles, four square, basketball, yoga, dancing and calisthenics.
Students were required to sign in and received a bingo health card with all the following activities. Each student participated in the exercises and games, and was rewarded with gift bags, filled with complementary school paraphernalia.
“Most people don’t prioritize fitness, health does matter. This is the first time many of my students are hosting an event of this stature, but it turned out great and they left with knowledge. You have to be active more, and stop sitting around,” said Martin.
Joi Duke, junior human performance major, said, “I really enjoy being in Dr. Martin’s class, I had so much fun putting the field day together. It took a lot of work, but it was great. I hope students gained something from the event and left with good health and nutritional advice.”
