On Saturday, April 24th, 17 students in the Panthers United organization helped clean up the coast of Galveston as a part of the Adopt-A-Beach program in conjunction with the ‘Keep Texas Beautiful’ campaign.
Panthers United is a new organization geared directly towards community service and working for the betterment of the students of Prairie View A&M University and residents in surrounding areas. This was their first community service project which allowed them to representthe university in a positive manner and learn about each other.
“This was the best way to kick-off their off campus activities and become familiar with each other and each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Serving is more than just serving. It can also be fun and enjoyable,” said Alisha Lowe, Student Volunteer Coordinator.
Crystal Beach, is one of the areas of Galveston that was damaged by Hurricane Ike. Panthers United helped clean around Crenshaw Elementary School with other volunteers and residents in the area. The school needed assistance because it didn’t have a lot of students which means no funding.
“It gave us a chance to get away from PV and spread the word of Panthers United while lending a helping hand to those trying to keep our earth clean and do a good deed,” said freshman social work major, Michael Tyler, president of Panthers United.
Panthers United is going to be doing a lot more campus work in the coming semesters. Soon, students will be able to count on Panthers United for reliable service and dedication to make Prairie View a better place to live.
“Our goal is to have enough members so that we may be able to simultaneously achieve tasks all over campus. We are an organization that will not have to advertise because our work will speak for itself,” said James Williams, advisor to Panthers United.
