ROTC honors cadets

Prairie View A&M University’s Army and Navy were joined together for an awards ceremony for their reserve officers and training corps at the alumni field on April 21.

The ceremony was open to the public but mostly consisted of family, friends, and faculty members who sat under a tent and focused on the cadets and midshipmen whoreceived various awards for their academic records as well as for their outstanding naval and military performance.

Dr. Danny R. Kelley, was the guest speaker for the event. He is currently the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Prairie View A&M University.

Kelley gave an eloquent and inspirational speech about his accomplishments in all of his endeavors.

Captain Eric S. Christophe, Marine officer and instructor who coordinated the ceremony explained that the overall purpose of presenting the awards is to acknowledge cadets and midshipmen by congratulating them for their performances in order to provoke motivation and dedication in each individual position.

These outstanding students have shown to be more driven to excel in their positions no matter what task they face because the ceremony is a constant reminder that hard work pays off.

A proud sophomore, Victoria Jones, who is a nursing major, received the “Rocks” scholarship and was awarded the superior cadet award for the military.

“I felt very elated, like I had gained a great sense of accomplishment,” she said. “Events like this are good because they get our name out on campus more, so that other people, whether they hear about it or happen to walk by and see it can know that we are doing positive things in our program. It is good for our cadets because it recongnizes their achievements.”
