“Last season ended great, We couldn’t have asked for more. We made it to the championship game, and left the season on a high note”, says Abe Garcia, head coach of Prairie View’s women’s soccer team. Garcia said this season he hopes to pick up where they left off, and make it to the championship once again, but this time bringing the first title home for soccer.
The Lady Panthers started off their season playing in the Holiday Inn-Waller College Invitational. Unfortunately, the Panthers had several injuries which prevented the team from being able to play to their full potential.
They played their first game of the invitational against Nicholls State, where both teams left the score board lonely. Neither defense would allow any goals to be made on either side, which left this game at a tie 0-0. The second game they played in the invitational was against University of Texas San Antonio, where they lost 1-4. The Panthers wouldn’t allow any more goals the second period of the game, but unfortunately neither did the other team.
“We’ve been working really hard to improve since we finished last season, and we expect to be champions this year,” says Yosselyn Aguliar, and her hard work during practice paid off, as she scored her first goal of the season during the game against UTSA.
The next two games they played in were versus North Texas and New Mexico. Sadly, due to various injuries on the team, these two games were losses for the Panthers as well. Even though the injuries were a setback, the game against Houston Baptist University was a comeback. It was a sunny day on Sorrel’s Field when the Panthers won against the Huskies 1-0. Monica Diaz scored her first goal of the season, with the help of Abigail Escobar with the assist.
The most recent game was against Lamar University which took place on Sept. 5, where they lost 1-2. Marrisa Woods scored the goal in the first period of the game; but to conclude the game the Cardinals scored one more goal and defeated Panthers.
