The Prairie View Lady Panthers kicked off their fall season with one goal in mind- making it to the NCAA tournament and winning the program’s fourth SWAC title. Last Season they fell one game short of the SWAC finals.
They brought in four new freshman and two junior college transfers before traveling to the Sam Houston State Tournament in Huntsville, TX.
The State tournament consisted of games played against Eastern Michigan University Lady Eagles, Sam Houston Lady Bearkats, La-Lafayette Rajin Cajuns, and Marist University Red Foxes. Although they took four losses, the Panthers did not go up without a fight with Sharhonda Marshall, Jasmine Houston, and Cheri Lindsey being the leaders for the match with a total of 19 kills.
On Sept. 2, the Lady Panthers took on the Arkansas Pine-Bluff Lions and started the season off great by making this the first home and conference win. In the first minutes, it was back and forth as each team fought to keep the lead.
Lindsey kept swinging as she hit a killer spike and drove the crowd crazy. Marshall and Breanna McNeil also helped the team out with great motivation and being quick on their feet. Even though Prairie View had three lead changes to win the first set, the Panthers trailed behind the Lions 10-7.
Lindsey gave two more spikes to tie the game 21-21, but unfortunately the Lions won the second set. In the third set the Lady Panthers lead with 13-7.
The Panthers will continue their trip to San Marcos, TX as they take on Texas State University on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 6:30 p.m.
