Nursing School: Do you meet the requirements?

Prairie View A&M University’s College of Nursing is known for producing distinguished graduates in local, regional, and national accomplishments as professional nurses. Ranking fifth in the state of Texas and second in the Houston-Galveston area for Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs, PVCON has a 96 percentile pass rate for students who take the NCLEX exit exam.

However, to move forward to the College of Nursing Houston campus, pre-nursing students must fulfill the requirements essential for nursing school acceptance. Many PreNursing students lack the information needed to get into nursing school on time.

Program Coordinator of the College of Nursing-PreNursing department, Flora Thomas, explained how students should read up on nursing school requirements so they do not fall behind. “I believe that many students are not informed and are not reading up on requirements for nursing school, because they fail to research their field. It has been said that if you want students not to know something, write it down, and that is sad because we need our students to move forward and succeed,” Thomas said.

The requirements for entrance into PVCON consist of completing all prerequisite course requirements and all nursing support classes with a minimum grade of a “C” and a cumulative GPA of 2.75. No support course can be repeated more than once, and no more than two support courses may be repeated. Passing the standardized pre-nursing admission test (NET test) with a minimum passing score of 75 for math, and 50 for reading is also required.

Thomas said, “PreNursing students should make sure that they visit their academic advisers, and fully evaluate if this career choice is for them. We strive for our students to be determined, and dedicated to their service as nursing students. The only way a student will not make it into nursing school, is if they do not follow the prescribed degree plan, have low grades, and does not pass required exams.”

Thomas suggests that students evaluate career choices and their requirements.
