PV cross country crosses into a new year

After a successful sports season Panther Athletics is back in full swing. The women’s Cross Country team began their season with high expectations on Sept. 3, at the Johnny Morris Invitational at the University of Houston.

When asked about their anticipations for the upcoming season Coach Angela Williams stated, “We have one of the best freshmen classes I have ever recruited, and we only lost two athletes from last year’s team; so, we have very high expectations for this season.” The team hopes to fulfill their goals after a second place finish in SWAC last year.

Out of seven teams present at the event, Prairie View placed sixth overall. The University of Texas in Austin received first place with a total score of 15 points. The University of Houston came in second with 59 points. Freshmen runner Sha’Reva Tyson led Prairie View with a total score of 26 points and time of 13:00:58. “The whole team is hungry. They smell victory this season and they feel that they have arrived to dominate the SWAC,” Coach Williams stated.

Despite the grueling schedule for both the men and women’s cross country teams, they still have a positive outlook on the remainder of the school year. Both teams are looking to win the SWAC title after the University of Arkansas- Pine Bluff swept the SWAC title with both men and women teams winning last year. Their next meet will be held at the Texas A&M Invitational at Texas A&M Intramural fields on Friday Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. The SWAC Championships will begin Sunday, Oct. 31 in Clinton, Miss.
