Whats good world,
A new school year ushers in many new challenges, policies, and faces, and in my case, a new chapter in my life, serving Prairie View A&M University and the surrounding community as Editor in Chief of a widely read publication.
At age 20, I stand as the youngest individual to ever embark on this wild, adventurous journey that running PVAMU’s student newspaper calls for. With that being said, this will call for me to be in many places at one time. From chasing down live beats, to covering scheduled event on campus, and even spending late nights in the office with my staff when we should be home studying, this will be a long year. Upon accepting this position, I was already aware of many of these issues, but my reason for accepting the position is simple; you guys!
Since entering PVAMU in Fall 2008, I’ve done nothing more than experience the pageantry and excitement that life on the yard has to offer. Although PV may not be a resourceful as other major universities, there is one thing that Pantherland possesses that can be found no other place; that general sense of belonging each and every student feels when they are walking this campus.
To make matters more interesting, we have The Panther here to entertain and inform us. However, The Panther is much more than the average student thinks it is. The sole purpose of The Panther is to provide an open forum where students’ ideas and opinions can be expressed in the most fair and balanced manner possible. With that being said, I encourage you to do one thing……..USE IT!
In a conversation I had with an administrator a while back, we discussed how the students here at PVAMU are quick to engage in pointless “dorm-room-talk,” about issues that directly affect them, but have the propensity to shy away from expressing their views in the presence of a credible person or a medium. It seems as if we just accept things when they go wrong, and rejoice when things are going according to expectations. As American citizens, not only do we have the right to voice our opinions, but we also possess the ability to make change occur through voicing our opinions. The same applies to being a student here at PVAMU. Fellow students, I challenge you to work with SGA, The Panther, and each other in order to make your college experience as memorable as possible. The only way to do this is to utilize the few resources we do have.
