In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, held Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. and the Office of Multicultural Affairs held the 6th annual Salsa on the Hill. Many students learned how to salsa, and those who already knew showed off their moves. At the beginning of this event, people were shying away from the dance floor, but as the night progressed it was clear that everyone was getting the hang of salsa dancing.
Son Tumbao played live music as the dance instructor, Emmanuel Gonzalez, taught everyone to dance.
When asked about his experience, junior Jared Terrell said, “It was a different experience. Being at an HBCU, you are not really exposed to other cultures; it was cool.”
Students were not the only ones who enjoyed Salsa On the Hill. There were plenty of faculty members in attendance, including Elma Gonzalez, director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs and coordinator of Hispanic Heritage Month events. She said, “I enjoyed how students came together and learned about other cultures because that is what this is all about.”
Students can look forward to its return next year.
