KPVU gears up for annual campaign

Prairie View A&M University’s campus radio station, KPVU 91.3, will hold its annual membership campaign beginning Oct. 1.

KPVU is a non-commercial listener supported public radio station located in Hilliard Hall. Its mixture of jazz, gospel, oldies, blues, urban contemporary, and neo-soul has filled the airwaves for nearly 30 years. The station needs funding to support its programming.

This year, KPVU is asking that listeners take part in the annual membership campaign, a drive in which supporters pledge to provide the station with monetary resources.

“This campaign gives the public radio station a chance to raise funds for the ongoing operations of KPVU,” said Cheryl Granger-Brooks, KPVU general manager.

The station has employed this system of fundraising for about 22 years.

The campaign gives students a chance to become members by pledging $15.

The process not only secures funding for the station, but also through membership, pledgers are entitled to further discounts at station sponsored events.

“In order for the station to sponsor more events, activities, and concerts, 91.3 needs your pledge,” said Granger-Brooks.

Students are also encouraged to volunteer to work the campaign.

If interested, go by the radio station and sign up at the front desk. People are needed to work in all aspects of this campaign.

KPVU is preparing to embark on a new enterprise, an all-new student-based radio station.

This groundbreaking station will be fully run for and by university students.

The station will feature news, sports, politics, hip-hop, fashion, and current events both local and worldwide.

Freshman engineering major Helmuit Eshun said, “I would love a station that covers what’s going on around the campus, like football games and events.”

The student-run station will be broadcast in HD format.
