IT Services clarifies lab purpose

Prairie View A&M University students have continuously complained about the overcrowding of computer labs, but are unaware that their fellow classmates are the source of the problem.

Information Technology Services, housed on the second floor of the J. B. Coleman Library, currently manages four computer labs: two on the main campus, one at the College of Nursing, and another on the Northwest Campus.

One of the general misconceptions that students have is that the computer labs on the first and second floors of the library are one and the same. However, these two labs are run by two separate entities. The second floor computer lab’s mission is different from that of the first floor. According to IT Services, the mission is to enhance academic enrichment, help students research, and provide the programs needed to get work completed. The first floor lab’s mission is simply to help with quick library research, which is why it doesn’t have the same programs that the second floor offers.

Although the missions differ, the rules and regulations are the same. There is still no food or drink allowed in the lab, and cell phones are prohibited. IT Services says the number one complaint from students is that the lab is too noisy to get work done.

Another misconception about the labs is that they are for personal use. General use computers are for school work only. Students using social networking sites prohibit other students from doing research, completing assignments, or studying. This adds to the overcrowding in the second floor computer lab. Increased enrollment has also contributed to overcrowding. In an effort to meet students’ needs, IT Services technicians will open an overflow room that contains more computers.

Senior communications major Cheri Lindsay says, “I think the computer lab is very good. Sometimes I wish there were more computers, but other than that, it is well kept and serves its purpose.” The computer lab also offers the option for students to check out the laptops that are available.

IT services also wants students to adhere to security tips when using these public computers. The first is to always reboot the computer so that the desktop will be cleaned and ready for new use. Lastly, always be sure to log out. DO NOT walk away from your computer without doing so. Your identity is at risk as well as your print quota.
