Prairie View football program ends losing streak

Victory over defeat at Prairie View A&M University as the football team scores a win against Mississippi Valley State University, final score 34-13; Placing PVAMU at 2-2 in conference play.

The Rice-Totten Stadium in Mississippi seemed all but bleak until the second quarter, as neither MVSU nor PVAMU made any successful motives at a touchdown.

Yet PVAMU was determined to change that, in the second half Brady Faggard kicked a 42-yard field goal with 11:46 seconds left in the quarter; giving the Panthers what they had been in desperate need of, the lead.

The second half of the game the Panthers were more than unwavering to show the Delta Devils what heaven feels like.

Shaun Stephen gave his first touchdown in the game, a 25 yard success which gave PVAMU a 17-0 lead.

Following two consecutive plays later, Jarvis Wilson recovered a fumble on behalf of the Delta Devils, as star quarterback K.J. Black found Stephens for a 15-yard score; 24-0.

Head Coach Henry Frazier however, is yearning for the successful recovery of Black.

In a SWAC teleconference call Monday morning he was quoted saying “He has a lot of work to do, but he is playing better. I thought his performance was better in the GVSU game than the MVSU.”

Black completed 22 of 37 passes for 230 yards and is currently still affected by his injury. Regardless of the team’s setbacks Frazier says “Our kids have to rise to the occasion, embracing the adjustments and trials.”

As the fourth quarter approached the Delta Devils grew angry. Adrian Martin caught a 19-yard pass from quarterback Oliver Hughes along with a clear field goal kick by Carlos Sanchez, finally placing the MVSU on the scoreboard, 27-13.

But it wasn’t enough, PVAMU Panthers dominated; Donald Babers scored the final touchdown on a 5-yard-run with 2:10 seconds left in the fourth quarter, leaving a final score of 34-17.

“We definitely got a much needed win,” says Frazier. The PVAMU Panthers are set to play this Thursday against Arkansas Pine Bluff, which will be a very intense game. PVAMU and ARPB have both defeated one another twice in the course of four years.

Frazier still has mixed feelings regarding the game, “When this is all over we will have played three games in 12 days, you’re going to be sore, but you have to fight through it, we have our work cut out for us, but we will be ready to play Thursday.”
