Although Prairie View A&M University experienced no incidents on campus during homecoming week, local authorities responded to calls off campus, one in which 21-year-old senior business management major Khaliq Bryant was shot, according to the Waller County Sheriff’s Department.
Chief Deputy John Kremmer said Bryant was shot around 2 a.m. Saturday while leaving a party at a local venue off Business Hwy-290.
He was shot in his leg by a .22 caliber weapon, and the bullet went through one leg and into another.
The shots were fired from the crowd, and shell cases found on the scene were matched to wounds on Bryant’s body.
Police say Bryant’s injuries were not fatal. He was treated and released from the Cy-Fair Medical Center, which reported him in stable condition upon arrival.
No arrests were made, as police say they have no witnesses from the scene. Kremmer encourages anyone who has information that can lead to arrest to contact the Waller County Sheriff’s Department.
The following night, the Prairie View Police Department responded to calls reporting shootings at the lake near James Muse Parkway of U.S.-290.
According to Sergeant Chris Garrett, police arrived on the scene around 1 a.m., when they saw students evacuating the scene. Garrett says several gunshots were fired, but no one was reported injured or harmed, and there were no arrests made.
Lieutenant David Webb said the incident is still under investigation, and also mentioned how much improvement he saw in Homecoming conduct compared to previous years.
Unlike last year’s shooting after the stepshow at the Babydome, this year’s event went smooth, as Webb said no major incidents were reported. However, Webb did mention a few break-ins in University Village Phases I and II, but said he was pleased with the overall effort by the students and the Department of Public Safety to maintain a safe environment during Homecoming week.
