Sunday morning the 2010 Cross Country SWAC championship took place in Clinton, Miss.
The women took off at 9 a.m. on the Choctaw running trails for the 5k race. Grambling State came in first with a total of 51 points, with Arkansas-Pine Bluff trailing behind with a total of 54 points.
Unfortunately, the Prairie View Panthers ranked in sixth place out of ten teams.
Coach Angela Williams said, “Whitley Dobbins had a spectacular performance. She was actually a walk on athlete this year, and was the first person to come in, in the 5k for the Panther runners.”This was her personal best and she placed 27 out of 76.
The men ran an 8k race on the Choctaw running trails. Mississippi Valley took first place with a total of 24 points, and Grambling State took second with a total of 59 points.
The Panthers came in fourth place overall out of nine teams with a total of 94 points. Abel Simie was the first Panther to finish the race, coming in 12 out of 60 runners.
Williams said, “I was expecting us to do a little better, and make it into the top four. Overall, I’m happy with everyone’s performance, and am looking forward to indoor and outdoor track season.”
Track season is next on the horizon for Williams which starts Jan. 14 in Houston, Texas, at the Lenord Hilton Memorial.
