The soccer program at Prairie View traveled to Pine Bluff, Ark., Thursday Nov. 4 for the SWAC Championships only to lose in the first round to Mississippi Valley State 2-1.
To begin the first period of play goalies, Melissa Aguayo (PVAMU) and Shelby Willcocks (MVSU) respectively anchor each team. After making her first save at the two-minute mark, Aguayo gave up a goal to F Jency Jose off the assist from Kayla Boyd.
Trying to answer back M Claudia Martinez (PVAMU) attacked at the 34:48 mark, but was unable to convert as Martinez’s shot was wide of her mark.
Prairie View began the second half very aggressively with two consecutive shots on goal, but were unsuccessful on both occasions. Their aggressiveness got the best of them starting at the 53:25 mark when the Lady Panthers committed three fouls in a six-minute stretch.
MVSU would pour on the Lady Panthers bad fortune with a goal from D Mandi Quirk (MVSU), making the score 2-0 at the 61:32 mark.
With the Lady Panthers on the comeback, off the assist from M Abigial Escobar (PVAMU), M Yosselyn Aguilar knocked in PVAMU’s first goal at the 72:36 mark, which unfortunately for Prairie View was their only goal of the day.
The Lady Panthers had seven shots, but only four shots on goal. Aguayo ended the contest with two saves on four attempts. The Prairie View soccer program finished the season with a (6-13-1) mark.
