Remembering King

Lieutenant David Webb of the Department of Public Safety delivered the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s world-renowned “I Have a Dream” speech Friday in the Johnson-Phillips All Faiths Chapel during the “Back to the Future” ceremony.

Webb said, “Each time I hear or recite the speech, I am moved by the inspiring words. When I prepare for the speech, I have to do it perfectly, or else, start all over again.”

Webb has been delivering the speech for the past 16 years. He has made appearances and received awards from Oklahoma State University in 1995, the FBI and the Mid West City Prayer Breakfast in 2003, the U.S. Air Force in 2004, Coca Cola and the IRS in 2005 among several others.

Alisha Lowe, student volunteer coordinator for the Office of Volunteer Services, said, “I think it was a success for those who were in attendance because many of us weren’t around when Dr. King did the first speech. It gave me chills to hear Webb speak the words of Dr. King so fluently and elegantly.”

The event also featured two performances from the University College Choir and a dance routine from the PVAMU Panther Dolls.
