The Lady Panthers bowling team competed in Tallahassee, Fl. for the FAMU Classic hosted by Florida A&M University.
The Panthers began the first day of action with a 702 to 600 win against Alabama State University in a four game Baker Set, then the Lady Panthers lost a tough match to the fifth ranked team in the country, Sam Houston State University, 629 to 674.
The Lady Panthers then finished the day with straight consecutive wins over Jackson State University 720 to 664, Florida A&M University 692 to 641, and Florida State University 729 to 696, where they eventually finished with a 4 win – 1 loss record.
The second day of competition was an unfortunate struggle, as the Panthers had a heartbreaking two pin loss to SHSU in team game format 916 to 918.
The Lady Panthers were able to recuperate with continuous wins over ASU 880 to 736, and FAMU 789 to 786, before the Panthers dropped the last two matches against FSU 1001 to 837, and JSU 773 to 822 resulting in a 2 win – 3 loss record.
Finally, approaching the third day of competition, the Lady Panthers were the second seed and began bracket competition against the first seed SHSU. The Panthers lost four games to two games in a best four out of seven Baker format.
The Lady Panthers then moved to the losers bracket and defeated FAMU in a hard fought battle gaining victory in four games to two games, with one game ending in a tie.
Eventually, the team moved back to the championship match which lead them to a devastating lost against SHSU again, four games to two games and the Panthers ended up finishing in second place for the tournament.
The Lady Panthers also landed the team two members on the five member All- Tournament team with sophmore Roonesia Newsom of Chicago, and freshmen Shanice Brown of Kansas.
Coach Glenn White stated, ” I’m really proud of the team with how they competed in this tournament. I’m particularly proud for Roonesia for making the All-Tournament team for the first time, considering she is just returning from knee surgery and willing to go all out and give the effort that she did shows her determination and will to compete.
We, as a team are still learning how to have that determination and will from beginning to end in competition. We will now resume preparation for the East SWAC Round-up held in Jackson, Ms in two weeks.”
Now that the Lady Panthers bowling team have ended the FAMU Classic, the team will be competing in the upcoming SWAC East Round-up Feb. 18-20 in Jackson Miss.
