The Prairie View A&M track teams made the short trek to Humble, Texas this weekend and had a successful outing at the Shirley Crowe Invitational at Turner Stadium. The men’s team earned first place in the meet while the women finished second.
On the men’s side, the Panthers picked up five first place finishes en route to 166 total points and a first place trophy over a field that included Houston, Houston Baptist, TSU and Southern.
Robert Williams won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.53 while Pat Range captured the gold in the 800-meter run with a run of 1:57.02. William Donelson won the 110-meter hurdles after clocking 14.54 followed by the 4×400-meter relay team of Donelson, Robert Williams, Edgar Smith and Evan James placing first in a time of 3:13.72.
In addition to the gold medalists, several Panthers also put forth a solid effort this past weekend as the team had several runners place in the top three of their respective events. Evan James placed third in the 800 while Abel Simie ran a time of 16:02.05 in the 5,000-meter run placing third. Patrick Overshown capped off the individual efforts in the sprints as he ran 55.61 in the 400-meter hurdles for a third place performance.
In the field, Pierre Shepherd won the high jump with a mark of 2.05 meters with Davion Harris and Reginald Trotter finishing second and third, respectively. Leonard Chanette jumped 14.82 meters to place second in the triple jump while Anthony Smith finished third in the shot put and javelin throws.
Three members of the women’s track team earned first place finishes as they placed second overall and finished only eight points behind the University of Houston.
Freshman Sylvonna Thompson won the 400-meter hurdles after running 1:03.10 while Andrea Chambers won the hammer throw with a length of 44.02 meters. Myesha Dixon rounded out the first-place performers after winning the javelin throw with a mark of 33.64 meters.
Corinna Brown had a strong weekend as she placed second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.84), high jump (1.6 meters) and triple jump (11.45 meters). Ariane Jordan placed third in the 100-meter dash (11.94) while Chambers also finished second in the shot put (13.01 meters). Myesha Rice and Ashley Johnson closed out the meet for the Lady Panthers as they placed 2-3 in the discus.
Both teams return to action on Thursday as they’ll participate in the annual Texas Relays in Austin, Texas on the campus of the University of Texas.
