The Prairie View A&M University football team ended the spring semester with the annual Purple and Gold spring game last Friday at Blackshear field.
Excitement filled the stands with students and family cheering, while the Marching Storm provided the funk.
Defense represented purple, while offense held down the gold side.
The game consisted of teammates going over continual plays that will prepare them for the fall football season. Defense focused on maintaining tackles and blocks, and received 27 points by the fourth quarter defeating the Gold team.
Junior and wide receiver Deandre Cooper shined on the field gaining two touchdowns passes for the Purple team, after a serious injury earlier in the year that almost caused him to retire from football.
Senior Moses Ellis caught an interception return for the Gold team and a touchdown pass. All players put their best foot forward giving undeniable energy on the field in hopes of winning another SWAC championship next year.
“I think we got a lot of things accomplished, we did well and have some things we need to work on. Offense is installed and we have special team units we want to put concentration on, and defense is where it needs to be,” stated coach Heishma Northern.
Northern says now that spring is coming to a close, the main focus is getting the team better in academics, having four a week workouts, receiving scholarship money for summer school for the players, and coaches will be traveling for spring recruitment in high schools.
The football team will be taking a break until summer training camp next August. To catch highlights of the spring game visit www.pvpanthers.com
