In the midst of the events and ceremonies on campus to commemorate Prairie View A&M University’s Homecoming 2012, students are given more reasons to celebrate the essence of being a proud Panther.
Mr. Prairie View, Timothy Bryant, is the university’s representative for the Verizon’s Wireless Campaign.
The Ultimate Reign Competition is a pushed incentive by kings and queens of historically black colleges and universities across the nation to make a video explaining why their respective school is the best candidate to win the $15,000 award for the entire community.
The king or queen with the highest amount of votes decides the winner and will also put voters in the running to win a Droid Razr phone.
Bryant, if named as the winner of competition, plans to give his personal $5,000 scholarship reward back to the university as “an opportunity to enrich and enhance our campus and provide the organizations with funds to have for next semester.”
This selfless gesture shows the integrity that Mr. PV has, but it also raises the concern about why he would donate a plentiful amount of scholarship funding back into the university.
“Financial aid is the number one thing here and I’m blessed to have my tuition and other school related things paid for. I feel like if you are blessed that you should be a blessing,” said Bryant.
Bryant’s video has been the leading promotion for students to gain awareness of PVAMU’s participation in the challenge.
After hearing the news about Bryant donating his future scholarship winnings, Devan Howard, a junior nursing major, said, “I think that it’s a very nice gesture to donate the money back, but it would be interesting to see where those funds are going to be used.”
With the help of the votes from the student body, Bryant hopes to beat out queens from Coppin State University, Albany State University, Fort Valley State University, and Texas Southern University holding the top four spots respectively, leaving Bryant to round out the top five.
Although the goal is number one, Verizon will judge the Ultimate Reign winner from the top three participants when voting ends on Oct. 31.
If Bryant claims a seat in the top three the winner will then be announced in November.
