The Prairie View men’s basketball team excited fans with a huge win in the home opener against Schreiner University.
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead scoring the first two baskets of the game. The game would remain close for the majority of the first half as the teams were tied at 15 with 7:46 left in the first half.
That would be the last tie of the game, as the Panthers would end the half on a 24-5 run.
The onslaught continued in the second half. Prairie View outscored Schreiner 41-29 in the second half to end the game with an 80-51 victory.
Senior shooting guard Jourdan DeMuynck led the Panther attack with 17 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Forward Josh Eleby also contributed 17 points. Center Mayol Riathin scored 14 points off the bench.
The Panthers defense was swarming all game, only allowing their opponents to shoot 31 percent from the field for the entire game.
The Panthers were also more aggressive going to the basket as they earned 10 more free throw attempts, out shooting Schreiner 23-13.
The Panthers had another home test Nov. 13 against Arlington-Baptist University.
The Panthers will continue their non-conference schedule as they face several difficult opponents in the weeks to follow, including Texas A&M and UCLA.
SWAC play begins Jan. 2, when the Panthers travel to Alcorn State University.
