The Council of Student Organizations, also known as CSO, recently elected a new executive board for the 2013-2014 academic school year.
With a new executive board, the council starts the year with the hope of restructuring the council’s image and sparking interest across campus.
A member of the Phi Mu Alpha fraternity, senior vocal performance major Jonathan Hicks, is serving his second term as president. Hicks said that the council’s foremost goal is to revamp and pique student interest about CSO’s.
As the university is a historically black institution, most organizations outside of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, otherwise known as “the Divine Nine,” often go unrecognized although CSO members are also part of the NHPC.
“We were considered non-Greeks,” Hicks said of the Council’s prior reputation.
After reaching unity within and banding together to raise campus awareness, the council now looks forward to bridging the gap with other National Pan Hellenic Council members.
Recently, the council members hosted a back-to-school hump day in which they gave out scantrons, pens, pencils, etc.
“I like how more of the CSO Greeks have started to be more involved with the school and school related activities. They are usually not as known as the others, except the Gamma Sigma Sigmas,” said freshman communication major Desiree Adams.
More of council’s goals this year include Greek unity and promoting healthy decisions among students regarding the membership intake process.
“It’s good that efforts are being made to get the name of the CSOs out there,” said Blake Jones, senior biology major.
In addition to the council’s many goals for the year, there will be a CSO Week for students to look for ward to next semester.
