The John B. Coleman library’s, fourth floor art gallery, exhibits Women Of a New Tribe that featured, the women of Prairie View A&M University.
The exhibit dates were during homecoming on Friday, Oct.18, from noon to 4 p.m. thru Saturday, Oct. 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The exhibit continued until Oct. 24.
The exhibits photographer Jerry Taliferro, a resident of North Carolina, photographed all black and whites shots of the women.
“Black and white unifies a show, and some people come in red outfits, we wanted people to come as they are and then we’d shoot, and then the black and white brings every thing together” said Kelley.
Kelley says, Taliferro did an amazing job of bringing out the inner beauty of all those being photographed. Taliferro wanted each photo to have its own distinct look and feel.
A few of those photographed were Kimberly Gay, reference and instruction librarian, Carol Campbell, special events officer, and Priscilla Barbour, student government association president.
Research and preparation for the exhibit had been in the works since March, with help from the galleries curator Lauren Kelley and her student workers.
“This whole project was a fundraiser to try to boost revenue for the art gallery, so we reached out to a lot of different groups of women who have a Prairie View connection,” said Kelley.
President George Wright was among some of the spectators at the exhibit. He stated that the photographer’s choice of using black and white added longevity to the photos and makes them timeless.
“When ever I look at a photograph I try to read something into it” said Wright. “I just hope are students will take advantage of coming and seeing art and things like that and have a real appreciation for these type of things.
