The Prairie View baseball team has been on fire this season with a 3-0 record coming into the Friday and Saturday games against the Jarvis Christian Bulldogs. The Panthers went on to improve their record to 6-0 with a three game sweep over the Bulldogs. The Panthers showed no mercy beating the Bulldogs repeatedly, giving them no chance of ever coming back. Coming into the season, the Panthers had three players who made the preseason All-SWAC baseball team. The players were senior catcher, Brian McGinty, from Houston, senior outfielder, Stephen Washington, from Mesquite and sophomore infielder, Rickey Thomas, from Spring.
During Friday’s game the team racked up 13 hits, and scored 15 runs off those hits. The Panthers held the Bulldogs to three hits with one run scoring. Both teams made only one error throughout the game. Starting pitcher Wrandal Taylor took the mound and showed no mercy, striking out the first two Bulldog batters and made third batter ground out to second base. PV came into the bottom of the first inning on to top of the Bulldogs 3-0.
The second inning really put the Bulldogs on the ropes. Even though they were beginning to make contact with the ball, none of their hits ever made it to the outfield. The Bulldogs’ Brian Harrison was the first of the inning to sit down by grounding out to second base. Terrance Colquitt followed Harrison by popping up to second base and Chris Rothwell struck out. The Panthers came back and gained more momentum by scoring again. Jabari Wimbs scored off a single by All-SWAC honoree Washington, making the score 4-0. The first game never was in the Bulldog’s corner letting PV win by a score of 15 to 1.
The second game against the Bulldogs, took place on Saturday leaving them distraught. Panther pitcher, Matthew Chase, started off like Taylor in the first game giving the Bulldogs the blues. Prairie View bats were hot and ready for action. The Panthers scored ten runs in the first inning making the score 10-0. It was like deja vu for the Bulldogs, their scoring was non-existing. The Bulldogs just couldn’t catch a break with the Panthers never letting up, winning the game 32 to 2.
The Bulldogs had one more game to try to redeem there team. The Bulldogs determined to start this game off on top of the Panthers for once scored one run when Rothwell scored off a sacrifice hit by Jake Cantrell. Even though JC scored Terrell struck out two and had two ground outs. The Panthers tied the game in the first inning with Anthony Dickson scoring the tying run off a sacrifice run by Brandon Lewis.
Terell looked like he found his groove in the second inning striking out one Bulldog player, making another pop up to right field, and the last out grounded out to the pitcher. The Bulldogs would on go on to score one more run while PV rallied off nine more runs to make the final score 10-2.
The Bulldogs had no hope of recovery, falling to the Panthers three games in a row. The Panthers are taking no prisoners this season, as they head toward a SWAC championship.
