Black History gospel concert raises funds for tsunami victims

Students, faculty and, entertainers filled the MSC auditorium for a Gospel Extravaganza concert in observance of Black History Month and the Tsunami Relief Fund Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. Host Roenia Thompson, a senior theater major, made sure the crowd was ready to praise. The concert began with an invocation by the Reverend Harold Thompson, and a song selection by the Apostolic Faith Choir. Other acts included the Voices of Corinth from Mount Corinth Baptist Church, and Prairie View’s own local celebrities, Michael Dixon, Layna Prince, and Willie J. Stone. Former Miss Prairie View Mary Ann Palmer-Springs sang a rendition of Jaci Velasquez’s “On My Knees.” A general offering was collected for the victims and survivors of the recent tsunami in South East Asia.

All of the acts served their purpose in uplifting hearts and raising spirits, and both awareness and funds were raised for the cause. “I believe that the recent tsunami was a sign for us to wake up and get right, and to know that God is everlasting and powerful and we should thank him for giving us one more chance to get our souls right,” said host Roenia Thompson.
