Mixed views on 2005 job opportunities

With hundreds of graduating seniors preparing to venture out into the real world this May, one question remains on their minds: Will any jobs be available for them after graduation? This is the dilemma that many graduating seniors here at Prairie View have to face this year. Many seniors believe that many job opportunities in America have disappeared, in part, because of the Bush Administration’s handling of the economy.

With graduation only a few months away seniors are becoming increasingly aware of the lack of jobs . “That’s my number one fear right now, that I’m going to come out and not be able to find a job,” says Melody Barnett, a senior communications major who plans on graduating in May. “I know that the job market is not that great for anybody right now.

While many graduating seniors share Melody’s concern, surprisingly, other seniors are more cautiously optimistic about their chances for employment. “I’m looking forward to the next step in life,” says Elizabeth Corrigan, a graduating biology major. “I believe that there are some job opportunities out there.”

Some experts believe that the status of the current economy has been blown out of proportion. “The economy is definitely on the upswing,” says Dr. Munir Quddus, dean of the College of Business here at Prairie View. “However, it’s not like students are going to be offered four or five jobs right after they graduate. But I would say that the May 2005 graduating class is entering a job market that is much more promising than the one last year.
