12 to be inducted in Hall of Fame

Twelve former stars of Prairie View A&M University sports history will be inducted into the university’s Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, March 2.

Prairie View’s 2007 Hall of Fame class includes former stars Anthony Christie (Track, 1988-91), Leroy Clark (Football, 1969-72/Baseball, 1970-74), Matthew Clay (Track, 1946-48/Football, 1947-48), John Freeman (Football 1949-52/Track 1951-53), Stonell Greene (Basketball, 1959-63), Douglas Hines (Basketball 1959-63), Charles Lewis (Tennis Coach, 1921-43), John Marion (Track 1936-39/Basketball 1937-39), John Moore (Football 1969-73), Louis Neal (Football 1969-72/Track 1970-72), William A. Stell (Football, 1954-57/Track 1954-57) and Essie Washington (Track 1976-80).

The Hall of Fame festivities will be held in the Memorial Student Center on the Prairie View A&M campus. The enshrinement ceremonies are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Tickets for this annual athletic fundraiser are $65 and all proceeds will will benefit the athletic scholarship fund. The induction of these 12 members will increase the Hall of Fame membership to 199.

“This group of inductees had numerous accomplishments while earning their degrees at Prairie View A&M University,” said Laura Collins, chair of the Sports Hall of Fame Executive Committee. “They continue the Prairie View legacy by being productive people throughout their communities.

Collins said, “In speaking with most of them and hearing their stories, I could truly sense their pride and loyalty to the university.
