The Rho Theta chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. hosted a drive to collect cards from the student body and faculty to send Virginia Tech students, Tuesday, April 17, in the MSC lobby.Thirty-two students were killed and 15 were wounded in what is being called the deadliest school massacre in U.S. history.
Jullian Keggins, a senior agriculture major and member of Omega Psi Phi, said the inspiration to do the drive stemmed from the moment he woke up.
“That was the first thing on my mind this morning. We wanted to let the students and families know somebody’s thinking of them,”said Keggins.
He said the turnout had been very good and explained that people’s conscience played a major role in filling out the card.
“People have been tempted to walk away but their conscience won’t let them. It has been every bit of what I expected,” he said.
The cards will be sent to the Eta Lambda chapter of the organization and the members of the fraternity at Virgina Tech will pass out the cards with words of inspiration to students.
Antyon James, a senior mechanical engineering major and member of Omega Psi Phi, suggested that the Prairie View campus get involved with the effort.
“The first step,” said James, “is making people aware of the incident.”
The organization plans to repeat the event Wednesday, April 18, and their efforts to help will not end there.
“I plan to send an article to ABC 13. We want to let them know that the campus is involved and the Prairie View family is concerned,” Keggins said.
