In the last match-up against Texas Southern University, the Panthers defeated the Tigers 65-60 Jan. 9 at the Health & P.E. Center in Houston, Texas.
The victory was a team win with many Panthers contributing during the flow of the game. Darnell Hugee scored 16 points and Dorian McDaniel added 12 points and eight rebounds to lead the Panthers, Christopher Jones also added 12 points and seven steals.
Guard Junior Treasure had 20 points and DeAndre Hall 15 for Texas Southern. Treasure would not let the Tigers get too far behind hitting big shots at key moments. Both teams shot poorly behind the three-point arch with Texas Southern shooting 2-16 and Prairie View only 3-18.
In a close game throughout, in the 2nd half the Tigers went on an 8-0 run to take a 49-48 lead with 6:48 remaining before Prairie View responded with 11 of the game’s next 13 points.
Hugee and Jones had four points each during the stretch, which gave the Panthers a 59-51 cushion with 2:43 to play and seal the victory on the road.
The Prairie View vs. Texas Southern game will be a classic.
