A campus without wires

What students have long anticipated has finally happened. Prairie View has gone wireless. Students can now access the Web just about anywhere, from the comfort of their apartment to the majority of the buildings on campus. It is expected that by the end of the year Prairie View’s entire campus will be wirelessly connected.

Chief Information Officer James Hobb said, “Prairie View has come a long way in the last two years since we have planned to implement this program. Last year wireless connection was only in University College and now you can receive a wireless connection anywhere here at Prairie View.”

“Prairie View also has one of the best configurations of any university,” said Hobbs. Hobbs hopes that with Prairie View going wireless it will cut down on the overcrowded computer labs here on campus.
Sophomore Joy Atchison agrees. “Having wireless internet in my room will keep me from having to go to the crowded library, especially with my crazy schedule,” she said.

Students on campus are thrilled to finally be able to get rid of their wires and cords and be able to get a wireless connection all around campus.” I think it is a good thing, because I have a laptop and the less cords and wires the better,” said freshman Chariti Davis.

If you have a computer and want wireless Internet “then you must have a centrino chip installed, but if not one can be purchased at a Best Buy, Circuit City or any other computer store and buy a network card, they also have ones for desktops,” said Hobbs.

The cards can range from $30- $100 depending on what kind of computer you have. To ensure security and install wireless access on your computer you should pick up a brochure which can be found in all University College Buildings, and in the MSC.

The brochure will tell you everything you need to know for installing your computer with wireless Internet, but if you do run into problems, you can call (936) 857-2525, the information help desk number or you can email Hobbs at jhobbs@pvamu.edu.
