The Department of Student Activities continued the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month Wednesday night with “Salsa on the Hill,'” a festival of authentic Hispanic dancing. The event lasted from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. After a welcome by Ms. Prairie View, Lindsay Slay, the event opened with a red-hot salsa performance by the Prairie View Dance Ensemble, and afterward students were treated to a quick lesson in the art of salsa dance. Amateur and seasoned dancers alike took to the dance floor as Son Tumbo, an all-college student band from Houston, provided music.
Alongside the traditional salsa dance, students were also exposed to other Hispanic dance styles, including merengue, bachata, and cumbia.
“This event marked the 3rd annual ‘Salsa on the Hill,'” said Elma Gonzalez, the director of multicultural affairs for Prairie View, “and we hope to bring this tradition of celebrating diversity to the campus.” The theme of the night was “no fronteras,” a Spanish phrase which means “no borders,” and many students felt that the event did a great deal to advance the bond of communal spirit which Prairie View has enjoyed for so long with people of all races.
