Let’s Help Today

Turkey has been hit by an earthquake.

In the last few weeks, Haiti, Chile, and now Turkey have faced a devastation I could never begin to imagine. So what is next?

It’s hard for me to relate to the disaster that has taken place here on our “lovely” planet, but that does not keep me from being sympathetic to all that is affected.

People, we need to help. I understand that we all may not be financially able to donate and contribute but is that really the only way to give service?

Why not find a local relief center and volunteer time, or even help to get out accurate information to those not as aware? Part of the problem that occurs is that people are not as aware of what is really going on as we think.

Not only are some of our peers oblivious to anything that is going on around campus, but some of “us” really don’t know anything about what’s going on in the world.

All of us seem to want to join the “I’m a leader” bandwagon, so let’s show leadership and educate one another. Let’s show leadership and set positive examples.

Most importantly, let’s be leaders and help by doing our part to help sustain our Earth. We can all recycle more, be less wasteful, and more mindful of our environment. It is really great that the university has taken a stand to support the “Go Green” campaign and start recycling paper, but that does not limit us to only recycling here. We should do the same for our bottles, cans etc.

We need to be more mindful of the energy we are consuming each day. Do we really need to drive as often as we do? Couldn’t our showers be five minutes less?

We tend to forget that how we take care of our Earth will determine how our Earth takes care of us. My theory is that the more we abuse it and ignore its needs, the more problems we will have.

Now of course I’m not saying that if we all pitched in to turn off our water while brushing our teeth, or bought hybrid cars we would have no more natural disasters. I feel like I need to make that clear, we are not God. We cannot control all things that happen, but we most definitely can do our part.

I challenge all of us, myself included, to be that “leader” we say we are and help out.
