The Prairie View debate team showcased its skills last week in the Red River Classic held at Louisiana State University, Shreveport. The parliamentary debate team consisted of Taneeka Barnes and Jemma Hepburn. The duo won a quarterfinal trophy in novice debate.The team went into the playoff rounds as 5th seed and faced 4th seed Northwestern Louisiana State, losing on a 2-1 decision. The overall champion in the tournament was Boise State University of Idaho.
From PVAMU, first year debaters Leah Mitchell and Janet Gamble-Webster won two of six rounds. Gabriella Murray was a brand new extemporaneous speaker on current events. Alberto Bellina debated in an open division public debate and progressed to beat the tournament champion in his last round, but needed early wins to advance.
Jemma Hepburn, president of the debate team, commenting on the team’s success, said, “Every team member showed dedication and passion for every single round. It was an incredible learning experience for the entire team.
