Striving to encourage students to become proactive outside of the classroom, the Office of Student Activities has recently created a new student organization on campus called, “Panthers United.”
Faculty lecturer for the Office of Academic Enhancement James Williams said, “This organization benefits students by enhancing their leadership skills, allowing them an opportunity to utilize more resources on campus, and gain more experience in working with more faculty, staff, and peers. Most importantly, it gives students the opportunity to be a part of an organization regardless of the students’ grade point averages.”
Officially established on April 8, the 20-member and counting organization is open to all classifications.
According to Williams, the only basic requirement for membership is the attendance of three consecutive meetings, in which ideas for up and coming projects and events are discussed.
According to Williams, the group will strive to participate in events like mentoring programs and nursing home visits.
Freshman interdisciplinary studies major Michael Tyler, who serves as president of the newly founded organization said, “The purpose of Panthers United is to help students exemplify lessons of duty, honor, academics, and chivalry.” Tyler contiued by saying, “We try to help every member excel in all areas of life, and set standards on campus for growth and achievement while trying to increase participation and retention of members on campus. We strive to help support and serve the university and local communities.”
Panthers United will perform their first task of community service in Galveston, Texas, where they will help to clean up and restore a beach as part of the “Adopt-a-Beach,” program on April 24.
