Candidates challenged during debate

The Student Government Association held its annual election debate on April 1 with candidates who ran for offices that included president, vice-president, and comptroller.

The candidates for president were junior history major Kyle Maronie, junior history major Brad Traywick and junior agriculture economics major Bobby Smith.

Edward Carrigan, became the lone candidate running for vice president, as his competitor failed to meet the qualifications for office. Comptroller candidates were Kris Taylor and Justin K. Johnson, who was not in attendance for the debate due to prior engagements.

The presidential candidates came with structural platforms, including Kyle Maronie’s “eight Points of Excellence,” Brad Traywick’s “We Can Do It,” & Bobby Smith’s “Restoration of Student Life.”

Throughout the debate, the candidate used their platforms to focus on issues that students are faced with on campus.

The debate unveiled all major attributes that each candidate possessed for their desired positions. Melissa Richard, chair of the Election Committee, and Latoya Wolfe, vice president of Student Affairs and Institutional Relations and moderator for the debate, made sure every question that students might have had for candidates were answered.

Each question drove candidates to unveil their ideas, with topics ranging from their passion for the positions to why students should vote for them.

Senior business management major Harun Jones’ question about police harassment around campus was another controversial issue which candidates were forced to address.

Although the debate was held a day before the campus was closed for Good Friday, a vast number of students came in support of the candidates.
