COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M University System regents voted Monday to authorize school president Elsa Murano to settle a lawsuit brought by families over the deadly bonfire collapse nearly a decade ago.
In 1999, the wedding cake-like bonfire structure collapsed while students were building it. The accident that killed 12 people and injured 27 ended the bonfire as an annual tradition before the Texas A&M-Texas football game, although students and alumni still have the event without university support.
University officials declined to comment, and an attorney for some of the families declined comment.
