Job seekers go to 39th career fair

The 39th Prairie View A&M University career fair took place in the Memorial Student Center Sept. 14 -17t.

The fair’s theme “get connected” is exactly what students did as they networked in hopes of gaining employment upon graduation.

It consisted of more than 88 different careers ranging from Texas Southern University Law School to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. According to Amy Emebet of the Office of Career Services, 50 to 80 percent of the students who attend career fairs are successful in finding employment in their field of study within the first couple of years after graduation.

When asked how it feels knowing success can happen and it starts right here, the event’s coordinator, Shadia Washington, replied “The student does all the work. We can only point them in the right direction. This event is a growing experience. It teaches students to gain etiquette, how to dress, and how to fill out a resume. We would rather have the students make their mistakes here so when they get out into the real world they will be prepared.”

Companies from several fields attended including State Farm Insurance, U.S. Military, and law enforcement officials, just to name a few.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service is one of the leading industries in the country. Statistics has become a major priority with all major businesses. If you are a math major the requirements are a minimum of 15 hours in math. Depending on the GPA the salary may vary. And if you are looking for a change of scenery after you graduate, The University of Arkansas offers more than 120 degrees to choose from. For those who missed this career fair, there will be another one offered in the spring of 2010.
