Information Security Awareness Tips

Phishing is when someone is trying to get your details (ID number, password, or bank account number) and wants you to enter it into what you believe is a secure web site.

Ways to protect yourself from

phishing scams:

1. PVAMU, your bank or credit card company will NEVER ask you to confirm your account information by email.

2. Look for your name in the email not a general “Dear Student” or “Dear Valued Customers”

3. Look in the URL browser. If the name is different than you expect then do not input any information. (Example: https://www.yourbank.com vs. http://www.imrobbingu.com)

4. In any email with a link to a website, rest your mouse point on the link to verify the address. If it doesn’t match – don’t’ click it. Best practice is to never use the links in an email to get web pages – always type in the URL instead.

5. Look for spel!ing(spelling) mistakes and/or grammatical errors.

6. Ensure the computer you are using has the most current security software. The University provides you with the ability to have a free copy of McAfee VirusScan for your Windows or Macintosh computers. More information can be found at the following link: http://www.pvamu.edu/pages/5875.asp
