The Prairie View A&M University men’s and women’s track teams devoured their opponents in point totals on Saturday at the 77th annual running of the Hoover Wright-Barbara Jackett Prairie View Relays. Houston area schools Eisenhower High School and Willowridge High School also won titles in their respective boys’ and girls’ division.
In the collegiate division, the Prairie View men sprinted their way to the title with a point total of 54 and victories in the distance medley, 4×100, 4×400 and 4×800 meter relays.
The 4X100 relay team beat Grambling for first place by 11 tenths of a second with a time of 40.79. The team included Karlon Jackson, Jack Owens, Chris Taylor, and Chauncey Lanier. Tim Obie, Sean Celestine, Ben Green, and Jason Okoro were the first place 4X400 relay team with a time of 3:09.27. Hezekiah Pascal, Simon Mann, Matt Jones, and Celestine outran Southern by 4 minutes to earn a first place ranking in the 4X800.
The men’s team also took first place in the discus, long jump, and the 3000 meter run.
On the women’s side, the Lady Panthers secured the victory with 44 points and a come-from-behind performance in the 4×400 relay along with a victory in the 4×200.
The members of the 4X200 relay team were LaQuita Alexander, Shellean Fyffe, Raina McMillon, and Nikki Cameron. These four Lady Panthers also recorded first place for the 4X400.
The women’s team’s Viktoria Manuel also took first place in the 1500 meter run, while Valencia Higgins earned first place in the high jump.
On the high school side, the Eisenhower High School boys, the 2005 Class 5A state runner-ups, dominated the relays from start to finish with a total of 109 points. The Eagles won multiple medals in the field events in addition to a first place finish in the 4×100 meter relay. Fort Bend Marshall was the Eagles’ closest competition with 68 points.
The Lady Eagles of Willowridge High School recorded two first place finishes on the field event side and finished second in the mile relay to edge out Eisenhower High School by a score of 106-105. Willowridge won the long jump and shot put events and secured the victory with a second place finish to Eisenhower in the mile relay.
