Burning up the track, men’s 1600-meter relay takes 1st place

The men’s 4×4 relay team placed first overall at the Houston Indoor Invitational, Saturday in the Yoeman Fieldhouse at the University of Houston.

This is the third indoor meet for the team looking to out-perform at the conference, and repeat as conference champions.

Jared Alexander and Daniel Anderson gave a good showing in the 400 meter dash as both placed fourth and fifth overall. The mid-distance sprinters gave the audience and coaches something to look at as both led the pack in their heats and won their sections.

As for some other events, Brandon Samples and Chris Taylor advanced to the finals in the 60 meter dash finishing fourth and sixth and running a 6.96 and 7.01, respectively. Both are elite sprinters on the team and plan to make an impact as the season continues. In a good display of athleticism, Matthew Jones ran the 800 meter dash in 1:55:90 and placed second overall. His finish is just seconds away from qualifying provisionally for the national indoor championship. Cross-country standout Alonzo Thomas finished fourth overall in the mile race and in the 5000 meter race as well. The men’s distance medley also ran well, by placing third overall.

The men and women Panthers will return this weekend to University of Houston for the Bayou City Championships, Saturday, Feb. 9.
