The Panther baseball team went to Edinburg to take on the Broncos of Texas Pan-America in a three game weekend series, but fell short in two out of the three contests.
In the early game on Saturday, the Panthers defeated the Broncos 5-2. The Panthers got ahead early with a run in the first inning on a RBI double by Brandon Whitby that scored Wilford White. Pan-America tied the game in the bottom of the second but Prairie View took the lead back in the top of the third with two more runs, one on a RBI single by Brandon Kendricks and the other on a RBI groundout by Odie Davis.
In the fifth, the Panthers scored two more runs on a two RBI double by Greg Ford. Derek Zapata (3-3) picked up the win by pitching five innings and giving up two runs; Wrandal Taylor closed out the game and got the save.
In the Saturday evening game, Prairie View lost as UT Pan-America took an 8-3 win. Prairie View scored first in the top of the second on a RBI single by Davis, but UT Pan-America quickly responded and took a 3-1 lead. Prairie View cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth on another RBI single by Davis. However, timely hitting and pitching by the Broncos of Pan-America kept the Panthers at bay. Adrian Canales pitched five innings in the loss for the Panthers, but could not pick up the win.
In the rubber match on Sunday, the Panthers went down again 11-5. The game was scoreless for the first four innings until Rashad White led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run. However, UT Pan-America scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. The Panthers responded with a run in the sixth on a solo home run by Myrio Richard but the Broncos scored four runs in the seventh and eighth innings to put the game out of reach. Prairie View scored three runs in the ninth, but it was too late to overcome the deficit.
