Track team puts on a show at TSU

The past weekend brought in Prairie View’s first outdoor meet since the indoor conference championship win. With different weather conditions, and a more open field of competitors, the Panthers were ready to start off the outdoor season with excellence.

The weather condition that challenged the Panthers was the wind that blew in front of, and behind the Panthers. Coming in strong for the women were Shonteria Johnson, who finished fifth in the 200-meter dash, and Laquita Alexander who came in fifth in the 400-meter dash.

The men had an eventful day. In the 400-meter dash, Jason Okoro and Daniel Anderson finished fourth and fifth. In the 110-meter hurdles Jason Mitchell finished second, and Darian Epting came in fourth and fifth in the 400-meter hurdles. Prairie View rounded out the top three spots in the 1,500-meter race as Alonzo Thomas, Ashton Brown, and Roland Dejean came in that order.

In the team relays, the men immediately took over the category out of the gate, finishing first in the 4×100, 4×400, and 4×800, and qualifying for regionals in the 4×1 and 4×4.

In the field events, freshman Johnny Piggee claimed first in the discus throw with a measure of 47.09 meters. Marcus Carter took third in the hammer throw with a throw of 47.97 meters.

The 79th running of the Prairie View relays will be held Saturday, March 29, at 8 a.m. at Blackshear Stadium.
