New traffic safety unit to create safer driving environment

The City of Prairie View Police Department has created a traffic safety unit in response to the large number of accidents that have recently occurred on campus and in the surrounding community.

Sergeant Garrett of the Prairie View Police Department said, “We will be increasingly more visible to curtail traffic violators and cut down on bad driving habits.”

The goal of the unit is to reduce traffic hazards, unsafe driving conditions that cause or contribute to collisions, apprehend violators of traffic laws, and to educate the motoring public regarding the causes of collisions.

The primary components include collision investigation, traffic enforcement, parking enforcement, commercial vehicle enforcement, occupant restraints, seatbelt and child safety seats, and apprehension of drivers under the influence.

According to Garrett, the Prairie View Police Department’s traffic safety unit is a vital part of providing the citizens of Prairie View with safe, confidence-inspiring driving conditions.

This traffic safety unit will be responsible for reducing the number of collisions occurring within the city, which have caused issues from minor injuries to death for some victims.

The department will also eradicate abandoned cars, remove traffic hazards such as trash bags and deceased animals, watch more closely for violations, and other dangerous elements which can cause accidents. Garrett wanted to reassure students of the goals of this operation.

“This is not about issuing tickets; this is about compliance and making this a safer driving environment for the students and the community,” he said.
