Business students go job hunting

The College of Business hosted its career fair for Hobart-Taylor students Thursday. The fair consisted of a few companies, some of which offered internships. A career fair is the chance for a company to meet and screen a large volume of potential job candidates, while simultaneously providing an opportunity for job-seekers to meet and screen a large number of employers. Recruiters explained to students during the fair, about their companies and the requirements of obtaining a position with them. Faculty and staff joined students in engaging conversations with the recruiters. Recently, Enterprise was reported by the Black Collegian and CollegeGrad.com as the largest college recruiter in the United States, as well as one of the 50 best places to launch a career. In North America, Rent-A-Car is part of a global strategic alliance with Europcar, creating the world’s largest car rental network. Beth Allday, talented acquisition manager for Enterprise, said, “I have been coming to Prairie View since 1996 and every year I’m impressed at how eager students here are about working for the company I represent. We can almost guarantee a Prairie View graduate will apply for a position each year.”

The student turnout was strong enough to make a lasting impression for the recruiters.

Although not many students brought their cover letters, many students came with their resumes and dressed professionally for the occasion.

Jessica Malone, junior business marketing major said, “I was glad the College of Business hosted their own career fair because the regular career fair at the beginning of the semester catered to technical majors, such as engineer majors, more than business majors.”

She also said, I am looking forward to applying for some positions with the knowledge I’ve learned here today.

INROADS, Inc. national recruiter Philip Witcher was impressed with the students at the fair. He said, “The students at this university were not shy to approach me at any time. They asked good questions, and they came with their resumes ready while dressing presentably.”

INROADS Inc. develops and places talented minority youth in business and industry and prepares them for corporate and community leadership. Even though this was Witcher’s first year at PVAMU, INROADS Inc. has been coming to the university for many years.

This fair was exciting to COB students because this was a career fair just for their majors or minors.

Many companies like HP computers had long lines during the entire fair, showing how interested COB students were in the companies. A reception was held following the fair for the recruiters and faculty.
