The Prairie View A&M University Office of Multicultural Affairs gave students the opportunity to learn about various cultures that exist around the world Wednesday at the International Festival.
Cultures united as one to give the students a taste of the world with food, drinks, candy.
El Salvador, Ethiopia, Mexico, Jamaica, and other nations exposed students to their ways of life.
The food was all homemade accompanied by picture displays, informational brochures, dancing, and music.
The festival began with the “Parade of Nations,” where the flags of different countries were posted throughout the MSC foyer. Later that evening, attendees were able to get a taste of each culture as each table shared a spread of food.
Many student attendees shared the desire to see more events like this on campus.
“Being a biracial student opens up your mind to different aspects of life,” said sophomore education major Holland Maples. “The international festival gave students insight into what other cultures, races, and heritages are like.”
Part of the inspiration for this event was the impact that students from other nations have made on the local community.
“Our international students make a significant contribution to PVAMU by their outstanding support and participation in these activities and celebrations,” said director of multicultural Affairs Elma Gonzalez. “The past outcomes at these cultural events have been excellent and very rewarding because it has engaged and enhanced students’ awareness and appreciation of the diverse cultures represented within the university.”
