Miss Prairie View A&M University Tiffany Ward highlighted the past, present and future of the university in her first seminar last Tuesday titled “From Whence We Come.”
Guest speaker Mayor Frank Jackson explained how the university’s history relates to the world. “This is just as much about Texas as it is about our history,” he said. “Prairie View has been unique in Texas. Texas is like its own country.”
Senior accounting major Cherrelle Hill said, “It’s always a pleasure and learning experience to hear Mayor Frank Jackson. He always brings enlightenment on how great this university is and the richness behind it.”
Others were encouraged to know that Prairie View has always been a staple in the world around us, but were saddened to know that so few of their fellow community members took part in this opportunity to hear of the institution’s past and things that could be done in the future.
“I think there is a lot of richness about the university that Frank Jackson tells us, but not a lot of students are here or around to hear about what would help us flourish in the future,” said Michelle Chapman, a senior agriculture major. “He mentioned how the students in the past took a stance and had so much accomplished, and it’s our duty as the new generation to get things accomplished and be the change we want to see.”
Jackson concluded the seminar by informing students of what needs to be done to ensure a bright future and to continue the legacy.
“Regardless of your profession, learn how to play the game,” he said. “Do what they do. You don’t have to participate, but play the game to get where you want to go.”
