Darrell James of Executive Search Consultants, spoke Tuesday, Nov. 9 about the advantages of working in corporate America, including the great exposure it brings and the financial rewards workers gain. James was guest speaker at a program organized by the Office of Career and Outreach Services. He gave excellent insights on negotiating compensation, making sure to point out that GPAs and majors play an important role in getting hired in corporate America. James said getting in a corporate America business instantly gives you international exposure. It is international due to the globalization of the wealthiest nations, making them more powerful than if they were just in America. The business consultant came to PVAMU mostly to speak about making the transition from classrooms to boardrooms, and adapting to the business environment.
He gave students information on creating their own brands and how to build a powerful resume that classifies the student as a quality candidate for a position. As owner of a search firm, Darrell’s client list includes multiple Fortune 500 companies such as: American Express, MTV Networks, Coke, Frito Lay, and HSBC Bank to name a few. James is an intermediary who searches for professionals with specific skills to work for multiple corporations. He said there is a higher demand for information technology, engineering, accounting, and network information systems majors than any other major although other majors should apply because businesses are hiring marketing, finance, and communications majors as well.
