Lady Panthers split 2 on road

The Lady Panthers basketball team split two games on the road at Missisippi Valley State and University of Arkansas- Pine Bluff this past weekend.

The Lady Panthers are currently in third place in the SWAC with a 5-2 record in conference play and a 9-9 record overall. They are trailing Southern University, who’s in first place, and Alabama A&M for the top spot.

On Saturday the Lady Panthers traveled to Itta Bena, Miss. to take on the Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State. The game was close from the tip to the last buzzer, which was in double overtime.

The Lady Panthers trailed at halftime 33-24, but went on a 12-2 run to open up the second half.

The Devilettes were up by six points with 1:53 left remaining in the game, but the Lady Panthers fought hard to tie the game at 52 with a lay-up by senior guard Dominique Smith with six seconds left lead and into overtime.

During overtime, the Lady Panthers jumped out to a six-point lead with two minutes left. Unwilling to give up, the Devilettes gained free throws and lay-ups placing them back into the game to force a second overtime. Smith hit a three pointer to begin the second overtime to give the Lady Panthers the lead, but missed shots and turnovers which plagued them throughout the second overtime as the Devilettes prevailed with a 71-69.

The Lady Panthers loss would keep them down when they traveled to Pine Bluff, Ark. to duke it out with the Lady Golden Lions of Arkansas- Pine Bluff.

The Lady Panthers won the game with a score of 78-45. The Lady Panthers had four players in double figures with Smith leading all scores with a total of 30.

The Lady Panthers have a two game home stand coming up against Alabama State on Jan. 29 and against Alabama A&M on Jan. 31, Both games will be held at the William J. Nicks building.
