For most college students, the adjustment of moving into a dorm, or on-campus housing from their own personal home space, is difficult. Moving from their family home into a smaller area with more people causes students to have to change their ways of living to make the situation more comfortable for their “home away from home.” Junior, Kristin Stephenson, said that her adjustment “was pretty tough” because at Prairie View everything is not hers and she was worried about being able to fit her own personal items and furniture into the apartment.
To make her space feel homier, she decorated with things that reminded her of home. She put her own nightstand in the room, added drapes and hung up paintings in antique picture frames.
Although moving can be difficult, and the idea of decorating may sound expensive, Stephenson had some personal suggestions about where to buy things that are affordable yet stylish.
“I would recommend antique shops, the Salvation Army, and The Dump furniture store. Many students may not agree with these run-down places, but I feel if you put a little old with a little new then you can have a fabulous room,” Stephenson said. So there are definitely alternatives to having a dreary room that you have to open your door to each day. Just spend time looking for what you want in your own home.
