"A Biblical Response to the Moral Issues of the 21st Century" is the theme of the 47th Annual Ministers' Conference being held Feb. 1-2 at Prairie View A&M University's Memorial Student Center.
The objectives for this year's conference are to develop an ecumenical leadership community, to cultivate and prepare individuals in the field of ministry, to engage participation in the sociological life of the community, and to enhance Christian leadership within churches.
The conference is held every year to raise money for the Johnson Phillips All Faiths Chapel and scholarships to students at the university.
The Rev. Charles H. Lewter IV, dean of the All-Faiths Chapel, is playing a key role at the conference.
Lewter has been dean of the campus chapel since Feb 1, 1994. He said, "At last year's conference, I was honored for ten years of service for working here at PVAMU and I think the Ministers' Conference is outstanding for students."
Under Dean Lewter's leadership, the conference has made positive strives in becoming more diversified with speakers, scholarly lectures, and women participants. "Our objectives have created an atmosphere that has allowed the conference to grow in numbers and has exceeded our projected registered participants," said Lewter.
This year's conference speakers include Dr. Ralph Douglas West, pastor of Brookhollow Baptist Church (The Church Without Walls); Dr. Stephen John Thurston, president of the National Baptist Convention of America, Inc; and Dr. Charles H. King Jr., presiding elder of the Cincinnati-Dayton & Indianapolis District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Others are Rev. Loran E. Mann, pastor of Temple Church of God in Christ; Rev. W. Darin Moore, pastor of Greater Centennial A.M.E. Zion Church; and Bishop Samuel L. Green Sr., pastor of St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church.
The conference set a goal of $50,000 for its scholarship fund and the chapel this year. Rev. Lloyd H. Crosby, Pastor of the Mt. Corinth Baptist Church in Hempstead, Texas, is this year's conference chair. Lewter says: "I look forward to raising even more money for students here at PVAMU because education comes first."
